Money-saving tips

Not only is writing a handwritten letter an enjoyable thing to do, which can brighten the day of friends and family, but it is also a useful tool which can provide you with a few methods of saving money. And who doesn’t like to save money? Grab your pen and paper and make a difference to your personal finances today!

Writing to your local council or MP

If you have some feedback about housing, transport, rubbish collections or the like, you might want to get in touch with the local council. If you’ve got questions or feedback about the NHS, tax, pensions and such, you might reach out to your local MP. You may think that doing so could be pointless, however a well-worded handwritten letter could make the difference between a change being made and a change not being made. Whether the change involves a pothole in the road, your local GP surgery or a bus service, the chances are it could very well save you and others money in the long term.

Writing a letter of complaint

These days a lot of people head to sites such as TripAdvisor to leave feedback on everything from hotel stays, to visits to museums and tours they have been on. However, if you’ve had a bad experience, putting pen to paper can often be a much more rewarding option. I recently got in touch with a food manufacturer as I’d had to return several packets of their product in a row to the supermarket due to the food being ‘off’ despite it being within it’s use by date. They were very grateful for my feedback (in fact, it highlighted a problem in their packet sealing department), apologised, and sent me a gift voucher along with a branded pen and notepad. Of course, I am not suggesting you find reason to complain to manufacturers and venues, but if you genuinely have a complaint, it is certainly worth letting them know directly via a letter rather than just on a review site.

Writing to your favourite brands

Do you love the brand of washing up liquid you use, or are you committed to your baby’s nappy manufacturer? Then let them know! Brands love to hear feedback — good and bad — and sometimes they are happy to reward customers with a voucher for taking their time to get in touch and share their positive feedback. Of course, if you’re daring, you could even write to them and ask them directly for a voucher or product samples!

Writing to your money

Yes, you read that correctly! Experts in finance have suggested that writing a letter to your money can help you gain financial success. The letter should include at least 5 wonderful things your money has paid for on that day, whether that’s a delicious lunch, a taxi fare, gas for heating or a gift for a friend. Use the letter to express your gratitude, and explore your feeling towards money.

As a long-term stationery lover, I adore working for The Pen Company. My childhood saw me carrying around a little red briefcase covered in stickers and full of pens, paper and other such goodies; my adulthood sees me doing pretty much exactly the same!
